About the instructor

Julie Lowe has ijaza in the 10 variant recitations of the Qur’an (ashara kubra) from Shaykh Uthman Khan, under whom she studied Jazariyyah, Shatibiyya, Durrah and other classical tajweed texts.  She has memorized the entire Qur’an in the recitations of Hafs and Shu’bah and is currently memorizing the recitation of Warsh.  Sr. Julie has been teaching tajweed for eight years, including at the Islamic Institute of Toronto where she has been teaching since 2012.

Sr. Julie is currently pursuing her PhD at the University of Toronto in Islamic law after completing a Master’s in this field at the University of London (U.K.).  She also holds a degree in Canadian common law from Queen’s University and a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Waterloo.  She has studied Arabic and some of the Islamic sciences in Amman, Jordan and continues to pursue further opportunities for Islamic studies locally and online.

This class is for brothers and sisters. Students will cover all of the main rules of tajweed at a beginner level, including articulation points, heavy/light sounds, meem and nun sakinah, stretching of sounds, and more. Sessions will include time for theory as well as recitation to practice implementing the rules.

This course is aimed at students who already know how to read Arabic, but who have not studied the tajweed rules specific to the recitation of the Qur'an.

Students who cannot read Arabic or recite the Qur'an at a basic level are encouraged to register in our Course "Introduction to reading and writing Arabic".

Enrolment capped at 16 students
