About the Instructor

Sr. Julie has ijazah in the 10 variant recitations of the Qur’an (asharah sughra) from Shaykh Uthman Khan, under whom she studied Jazariyyah, Shatibiyyah, Durrah and other recognized classical tajweed texts. She has memorized the entire Qur’an in the recitations of Hafs and Shu’bah, and is currently memorizing the recitation of Warsh. Sr. Julie has been teaching tajweed for the past four years, first at Shatibiyyah Institute and then with the Islamic Institute of Toronto where she has been teaching since 2012.

Sr. Julie is currently beginning her PhD at the University of Toronto in the area of Islamic law after completing a Master’s in this field at the University of London (U.K.). She holds a degree in Canadian common law from Queen’s University, as well as a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Waterloo. She actively pursues other Islamic studies opportunities part time, and has completed the Islamic studies program offered by AlMaghrib Institute.


This class is for brothers and sisters. Students will cover all of the main rules of tajweed at a beginner level, including articulation points, heavy/light sounds, meem and nun sakinah, stretching of sounds, and more. Sessions will include time for theory as well as recitation to practice implementing the rules. This course is aimed at students who already know how to read Arabic, but who have not studied the tajweed rules specific to the recitation of the Qur'an.

Students who have not comp;eyed the first semester are required to schedule an assessment with the instructor. You can send an email to the Registrar.
